Our Story

I consider myself a realist. I see the growing number of people standing on off‑ramps and street corners holding signs asking for help—many saying they’re hungry.

I live in Southern California, but I’ve traveled to major cities across the country, and the situation looks the same everywhere: more and more people experiencing homelessness asking for donations.

It raises a real question: Are we actually helping? There are hundreds of shelters, food kitchens, and community programs in almost every city—places where someone can get meals, shelter, and basic essentials. So what’s the deeper issue?

A major challenge is addiction. Many shelters have rules prohibiting drug or alcohol use, which means some individuals choose not to stay there. And the reality is that a portion of the donations given on the street may end up supporting those addictions, unintentionally enabling the cycle.

At Honest Handouts, we focus on something different. We support individuals who are clean and sober—people who are also struggling, but who are actively working to stay off drugs and alcohol. They need help too, and we’re here to make sure your donations go to those who will use them responsibly and honestly.
